Did the automovie press just get all the predictions wrong? I thought Chevy would release news or a mid engine Vette over the weekend.

No one really expected it to be released this weekend. There were some hopes that Chevy might drop a hint, but the expectation seemed to be that the next Corvette(mid-engined or not) would have its own special launch event.
